"There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized."
Thought Police - 1984, George Orwell

The Big Brother reality show is great fun because everyone knows what’s going on.  They know they are being watched.

However, you are constantly being watched as well – by the Police, the Government, by the UK security services.  Everything you do on the internet is being recorded and tracked.  As you drive about town your car registration is being automatically recorded.  The mobile phone in your pocket is giving the telephone companies a constant location of where you are and who you’re phoning.  The phone companies have to keep this data for the government to analyse whenever they want.

Why should you be tracked like this?  Is it right that your personal privacy is invaded like this?

But how do you know that the data is being used for legitimate purposes?

In the old days the police needed to get a court order to tap a phone.  There were safe-guards in place. No more does this happen.  Now the authorities can track you and monitor you without anyone knowing and without any record being kept.

This is all being done in name of terrorist and crime prevention.  The reality is that the terrorists have already won – they are forcing this society into a subservient frightened society where everyone is watching everyone else.

Who’s watching the watchers?   When will it stop?
